He is a trumpeter born in San
Diego, California to a
musical family of seven generations of musicians. He began his musical education by
learning the violin but moved to the trumpet when he was seven, with his
first instrument being his grandfather's old cornet. He obtained music degrees at the
Cleveland Institute of Music and won many national awards which paved the
way to performing with many major American orchestras such as the Detroit
Symphony and Cleveland Orchestras where he
was acclaimed for his solo performances of Bach and Hummel trumpet
concertos. While
holding the position of Assistant Professor of Trumpet at the
Oberlin Conservatory, he was approached by the tuba player Chuck
Daellenbach who asked him to become the replacement for Ronald
Romm in Canadian
Brass
in 2000. He remained with them for three
years of touring and performing but left them in 2003 to spend more time
with his family. He returned to Canadian
Brass
in 2006 to play as a member of their Trumpet
"Dream Team".
Donald Erb, who is an Australian composer,
has written two solo trumpet works for him. He has been awarded the alumni
achievement award from the Cleveland Institute of Music, released his first
solo CD in 2005 and became Principal Trumpet for Dallas Symphony Orchestra
for the 2006/7 season.
