He is a British trumpeter who started his
professional career as a Co-Principal Trumpet in the Royal
Opera House Orchestra
at
Covent Garden being led by conductors that include Sir Georg Solti and Sir
Colin Davies. After
having become involved with the English Brass Ensemble and giving
performances with the London Sinfonietta and the Philip
Jones Brass Ensemble
he began internationally
touring with them all in 1980.
For the next decade he would appear at many global venues playing commissioned
works and premieres by acclaimed contemporary composers such as Elliott
Carter, Witold Lutoslawki and Sir Peter Maxwell Davies, and in 1984 he
appeared a the Toulon Prix de Concourts trumpet competition where he was a
prize winner. He
branched out as a soloist and performed with many of Britain's
orchestras and ensembles and in 1995 became the Principal Trumpet of
the BBC National Orchestra of Wales where he was the featured
soloist on Aaron Copland's "Quiet City" and Haydn's
"Trumpet Concerto". He has also been heard as a
member and/or soloist of the London Philharmonic, the Brandenburg
Sinfonia, London Mozart Players, the London Concert Orchestra, the
Bournemouth Symphony, the Chamber Orchestra of Europe, the Britten
Sinfonia, in duets with the pianist Juliet Edwards, including a
series of 9 recitals in China, the London Pro Arte Orchestra, the
Orchestra of St. John's and on several recordings by the English
Brass Ensemble, the National Philharmonic Orchestra, on several
movie soundtracks that include the artists Sir Bob Geldof and Sir
Paul McCartney
, and on a fundraising CD for
the Clarence Adoo Fund.. He is
the Artistic Director of the record label Brass Classics and he has
conducted the London Mozart Brass Ensemble and the International Celebrity
Trumpet Ensemble. As a teacher
he is a Professor at the Royal College of Music and runs annual brass
courses in Benslow, Aberystwyth and Dartington, and as an editor he works
on Brass Wind Publications: the English Brass Collection and the Paul
Archibald Collection.
