Cellist who
started playing at five years of age and attended the Royal Academy of
Music where she took formal lessons from Florence Hooton. She also studied in Geneva, Switzerland,
under the watchful eye of Pierre Fournier.
On 13th
May 1978, she teamed up with fellow musician Eric Fenby
to perform at The Delius Society meeting at Paviour’s
Arms on Page Street
in London, England.
She became a
member of the Philharmonia Orchestra of London in 1989.
In 1993, she
appeared on the eclectic album, The
London Cello Sound. The
album, which featured forty cellists from some of the finest orchestras in England,
ranged from The Tudor Period to the 20th century, and included
one of the most famous cello pieces ever, “The Swan” from Carnival of the Animals by Camille
Saint-Saens. Its acoustics benefited
from being recorded at All Hallow’s Church
in Gospel Oak, London.
Another
recording on which she appears is Denise Leigh’s 2005 LP, Pie Jesu. It’s another century-spanning
effort that includes such disparate titles as “In the Bleak Midwinter”
and “Summertime”.
On 23rd
April 2005, the Philharmonia appeared at Royal
Festival Hall with special guests, pianist Emanuel Ax and soprano Angela Denoke. The
program comprised Ludwig van Beethoven’s “Piano Concerto No. 5
in E flat, Op. 73” (“Emperor”), Richard Strauss’s Also sprach
Zarathustra, and “Prelude and Liebestod”
from Richard Wagner’s opera, Tristan
und Isolde.
