Trombonist who
attended the University
of Cincinnati’s
College-Conservatory of Music and studied under Ernest Glover and
concomitantly was a touring member of the American Wind Symphony.
He went on to
join the Montreal Symphony Orchestra and the Boston Pops Orchestra until
becoming a member of the Boston Symphony Orchestra. In 1975, he was named Principal
Trombone, a post he had held with the Boston Pops, and released Le Trombone Francais. Its sequel, Le Trombone Francais II, arrived in 2001.
In 2004, he
released An Evening from the 18th
Century. Other recordings
on which he appears include All-American
Trombone, American Showcase, Cornet Favorites: Highlights from Cousins, Hindemith on Trombone, In the Family, and The Return of the Alto. He has recorded with the Boston
Pops, the BSO, Canadian Brass, Empire Brass, and Summit Brass.
In 2005, he
won the International Trombone Association’s ITA Award. He retired from the BSO in 2008. He and his wife have run a bed and
breakfast in Richmond, Massachusetts, and is a Certified
Specialist in Wine, according to the Society of Wine Educators.
On 23rd September
2010, he was the Guest Artist at the Ithaca School of Music, where he had
previously performed in the Fruhling Posanen concert with the Ithaca
College Trombone Troupe and the International Trombone Festival.
In the field
of musical education, he has taught at Boston
University, the International
Trombone Workshop, the Keystone Brass Institute, the New England
Conservatory of Music, and the Tanglewood
Music Center.
