Cellist who
started playing at eight years of age and attended the Royal Conservatory
in The Hague a few years later.
In the late 1990s, she joined the Ruysdael Quartet. She played the solo part in Don Quixote by Richard Strauss with
the Royal Conservatory orchestra in 1998. By 1999, she was a member of the Netherlands
Radio Symphony Orchestra. The
Ruysdael Quartet placed first in the Charles Hennen
Competition in 2000 and second in the Avro 2002 Press Award finals.
On 12th
August 2002, Winnyfred teamed up with violinist Suzanne
de Groot at the Grachtenfestival. The Netherlands Radio Symphony
Orchestra and Groot Omroepkoor
rang in the holidays on 21st December 2002 with Roel van Oosten’s “Quatre Noels Anciens”, Arvo Part’s “Cantus in memory of Benjamin
Britten”, Alexandre Tansman’s
oratorio, Isaie, le Prophete,
and Ralph Vaughan Williams’ “Fantasia on Christmas Carols”.
On 13th
April 2003, Winnyfred, along with violinists Nynke Hylkema and Joris van Rijn and violist Gijs
Kramers, performed Ludwig van Beethoven’s “Strijkkwartet nr 2 in E kl. op. 59”, Claude Debussy’s “Strijkkwartet in G kl. op. 10”, and Igor Stravinsky’s “Concertino
voor strijkkwartet”. She appeared at the Gaudeamus Contemporary Music
Center on 14th October
2004 with clarinetist David Kweksilber, flautist
Ned McGowan and percussionists Tatiana Koleva and
Fedor Teunisse in a
program of contemporary music from Cuba.
On 9th
July 2005, The Patusan Trio, which comprised
David, Winnyfred and percussionist Hans van der Meer, supplied live music for the silent films Lord Jim and Victory at the Nederlands Scheepvaartmuseum.
One day later, the Ivogels, which
consisted of The Patusan Trio and pianist Leo Bouwmeester, offered up an eclectric
program that included: “After
You’ve Gone” by Creamer and Layton; “Bad Timing”, “Flappy Rubowsky Sings the
Blues”, “Into My Heart” and “What Can I Do”
by David Kweksilber; an excerpt from “Piano
Concerto No. 3” by Sergei Rachmaninoff; “Interludium”
by Paul Hindemith; “Le Cygne” (“The
Swan” from Carnival of the Animals)
by Camille Saint-Saens; “L’Eternit
des Oiseaux” (co-written by David and Winnyfred), “The Naardermeer”
by Bernard van den Sigtenhorst Meyer; and, “Ornithology” by
Charlie Parker.
David, Winnyfred and Guus Janssen
joined forces on the 27th and 28th of August 2005 for
the Zomer Jazz Fiets
Tour and a recital at de kerk van Garnwerd of material listed above, plus “Een Futuristische Historie” by David, Guus
and Winnyfred, “Galsteen”
by Paul Termos, “Passage” and “Walden
Pont” by Guus, and “Solitude”
by Duke Ellington. Many of the
aforementioned works can be found on Futeristische Historie,
which hit the shelves in 2006.
On 23rd
April 2006, Winnyfred and clarinetist Rani Heymann and pianist Uzi Heymann interpreted Beethoven’s “Trio opus
11”, Johannes Brahms’ “Trio, Op 114”. Winnyfred
and fellow cellists Rebecca Smit and Annie Tangberg offered up a mixed bag on 15th April
2007 that included music by Johann Sebastian Bach, Scott Joplin, and Zoltan Kodaly.
On 5th May 2007, David and Winnyfred
joined pianist Gustavo Corrales and harpist Ernestine Stoop at Musiekgebouw Aaa ‘t Ij for a program that comprised Diana Arismendi’s “Senales
en el cielo (I y II)”, Claudio Calderon’s
“Toccata Xoropo II”, Paul Desenne’s “Gitane”
from “Jaguar Songs”, Juan Francisco’s “Sanz Maricela”, Adina Izarra’s “A traves
de algunas transparencias”,
Keyla Orozco’s “Estudio
del pajarillo”, Alfredo Rugeles’s
“Inventio”, and Ricardo Teruel’s “Destilado
de Joropo” from “Sonatina
destilada”.
The
Netherlands Radio Chamber Philharmonic and Groot Omroepkoor collaborated on Girolamo
Abos’s Stabat Mater, which was sandwiched between Franz Joseph Haydn’s
“Symfonie nr. 83 in g” (“La Poule”) and Jean-Philippe Rameau’s “Suite
uit Nais” on 5th
October 2007. In 2008, Winnyfred appeared on the Metropole
Orkest’s CD, Fast City: A Tribute to
Joe Zawinul. Ensemble Immanuel, which featured Winnyfred, pianist Lauretta
Bloomer, soprano Jane Oakland and flautist Karin Leutscher,
performed “The Tear-Drop” by Tom Harrold
on 23rd May 2008 at the Begijnhof Kerk in Amsterdam.
On 13th
December 2008, the Netherlands Radio Philharmonic Orchestra, Groot Omroepkoor and the Nationaal Kinderkoor celebrated
Advent with Mauricio Kagel’s Sankt-Bach-Passion. Ensemble Immanuel entertained at the
Stadhuis/Muziektheater, Boekmanzaal
on 17th March 2009 with works of Maurice Ravel and Carl Maria
von Weber. On 17th October
2009, the Netherlands Radio Philharmonic Orchestra and Groot
Omroepkoor served up a mostly French affair that
began with Debussy’s “Prelude a l’apres-midi d’un faune”,
continued with Klaas de Vries’
“Wake” and concluded with Ravel’s Daphnis et Chloe.
They were joined by the men of the Latvian State Choir on 12th
December 2009 to supply music for the actors in Gioachino
Rossini’s Guillaume Tell.
On 18th
December 2009, the Netherlands Radio Philharmonic Orchestra, Groot Omroepkoor and the Nationaal Kinderkoor honoured the yuletide with Brahms’ “Twee motetten opus 29” (“Es ist
das Heil uns kommer her” und “Schaffe
in mir, Gott, ein rein Herz”, Anton
Bruckner’s “Ave Maria” and “Virga
Jesse floruit” and Ralph Vaughan Williams’
Hodie.
The Holland Symfonia opened up 2010 with a trio of concerts at Philharmonie Haarlem, Schouwburg
Almere and Theater de Vest Alkmaar that
included: “Ach, ich fuhl”s from The Magic Flute by Wolfgang Amadeus
Mozart; “E strano – Sempre libera” from La Traviata
by Giuseppe Verdi; “Feuerfest” by
Josef Strauss; “Fruhlingsstimmen”, “Geshichten aus dem Wienerwald”, “Kunstler
Quadrille” and “Unter Donner und
Blitz” by Johann Strauss, Jr.; “Glitter and Be Gay” from Candide by
Leonard Bernstein; “Marietta’s Lied” from Die tote Stadt
by Erich Korngold; and, “Ouverture”
from Der Freischutz
by Weber.
On 13th
February 2010, the Netherlands Radio Philharmonic Orchestra presented
Pierre Boulez’s “Rituel: in memoriam Bruno Maderna”, Debussy’s “Iberia”,
Matthias Pintscher’s “Reflections on
Narcissus voor cello en orkest”
and Ravel’s “Alborada del gracioso”.
They paired Sergei Rachmaninov’s “Konzert fur Klavier und Orchester Nr. 1 fis-Moll op.
1” with Dmitri Shostakovich’s “Sinfonie
Nr. 7 C-Dur op. 60” (“Leningrad”)
on 9th March 2010.
On 17th
April 2010, Winnyfred paired up with organist Henk Verhoef at the Waalse Kerk in Amsterdam. You can hear her cello stylings on the Ruysdael Kwartet’s
CD, Avro Klassiek
Presenteert, on which they interpret works by
Bela Bartok, Haydn, Anton Webern, and Hugo Wolf.
