He is an English orchestral conductor and cellist who studied
at the Guildhall School of Music, the Prague Academy of Music and in the United
States with Maurice Eisenberg. His career as a cellist saw him
performing with orchestras that include the BBC Symphony Orchestra
and the Royal
Philharmonic
. He founded the English Symphony
Orchestra (aka English
String Orchestra
) in Malvern, Worcester, England, in
1980. He has been a guest
conductor with many acclaimed orchestras and was also the Music Director of
the Jyvaskyla Sinfonia in Finland,
whose audiences grew by 60% during his tenure. His
work with the ESO has seen him
tour all over the world and allowed him to work with many soloists
including Nigel Kennedy, Emmanuel Ax and Rada
Lupu. He is the Artistic Director
of the Malvern Festival and in 1985 he worked in collaboration with Sir
Michael Tippet to celebrate his eightieth birthday. In 1995 he received an Honorary
Doctorate from Coventry University. In 2000 he became the Artistic
Director of the Nimbus Foundation and created the Summer Series at Wyastone Estate concert hall and in 2004 he launched
the ESO Elgar Festival. As a
guest he has appeared on several radio programmes and television including
a BBC's Omnibus, a broadcast
on Elgar which was heard in several major cities in the United Stated and the
series The 1st Eleven
which was aired during the World Cup.
