     Chan, Susan

    She is a violist, teacher and adjudicator who studied at Indiana University and later took chamber music studies with the Juilliard String Quartet.  She has since toured nationally and internationally as a soloist, guest musician and member of many ensembles such as the Aire Born Strings , the Oxford String Quartet, the Pro Arte Chamber Orchestra of Boston, the Ronen Chamber Ensemble, Sacramento Symphony Orchestra, the Scott Chamber Players, Sinfonia San Francisco and Suzuki & Friends.  She has more recently been heard with the Indianapolis Chamber Orchestra and the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra and with the New Century String Quartet, which she co-founded in 1999 and for which whom also acts as Artistic Co-Ordinator.  She has performed the premiere of a viola concerto written specifically for her and has also commissioned works such as "String Quartet No. 1" by James Beckel and "Spirals" by Chris Rutkowksi to be performed by the New Century String Quartet.  Working at many festivals, she has been a fellow at the Tanglewood Festival on two occasions with the acclaimed conductors Gunther Schuller and Seiji Ozawa and has also been a fellow of the IHEM, Switzerland and received a Creative Renewal Arts Fellowship from the Indianapolis Arts Council in 2005.  As an adjudicator she has worked on Young Artist Competitions in Indiana and also on scholarship funds.  Outside of classical music she has been heard on albums by Joe Strummer from The Clash, Denver & The Mile High Orchestra, Daniel Narducci, Sandy Patti and Kathy Troccoli.  As a teacher she worked at Indiana University (Bloomington) from 1980 to 1982 as an Associate Instructor in Viola and is currently on the faculty of the University of Indianapolis.
