She is a violist born in San Diego, California, who started
learning the violin when she was six and concentrated on the viola from the
time she was fourteen.
She attended high school and then in her senior year she
studied at the Interlochen Arts Academy and graduated in 1984. She went onto attend the Oberlin
Conservatory and the Curtis Institute of Music and the Juilliard School,
where she achieve her Masters degree in music in 1993.
She attended the Marlboro Music Festival for two years
in the summer season and landed the position of artist-in-residence for
1993 at the Laurel Hill Festival of the Arts in Pennsylvania.
The following year she went into the teaching side of
things and started working in the faculty of Philadelphia’s Temple
University as a chamber music and viola tutor where she remained until 1996. Still performing during these years
she was the Principal Viola for the Concerto Soloists Chamber Orchestra of
Philadelphia, a member of The Philly Pops, The Tchaikovsky Chamber Orchestra,
The Opera Company of Philadelphia and the Santa Fe Opera and substituted at
the Philadelphia Orchestra and New York Philharmonic.
In 1996 she became a violist of the Detroit Symphony
where she has remained ever since and now sits on their String Auditions
Committee and is on the DSO Executive Board of Directors as an elected
member.
She is also a member of the DSO Ambassador Quintet and
a founding member of the Detroit- based ensemble The Woodland Trio who have
been performing in their local area since 1999. They have since performed on a national and
international basis at venues in the US and Canada and in 2002 they
performed the world premier of Images of Mogador by James Hartway at
the Printemps Musical des Alizas Festival in Essaouira, Morocco.
She has been a member of the adjunct faculty of the
Department of Music at Detroit’s Wayne State University since 1998 and the
University of Michigan since 2005.
She also teaches viola at the Detroit Symphony Civic Orchestra and
performs in string ensembles for outreach programs put on by the DSO.
Her sisters Sarah and Nancy are also professional
musicians.
