He is a tuba player who grew
up in Wisconsin in a family whose
history contains a line of German and Swiss musicians. He studied at the Eastman School of Music
and received a doctorate when he was 25, following which he taught music at
the University of Toronto. He met
up with Gene
Watts who was a
trombonist and told who him of his plans to create a brass quartet, which
would eventually become a quintet.
In 1970 they were founder members of the Canadian
Brass along with Graeme Page and Stuart Laughton
and they gained fame for performing daring stage presentations of classical,
jazz and popular music. One of his projects was a series of
200 brass works which were published by Hal Leonard and are now played
widely by students.
