He is an
orchestral conductor who was born in
Birmingham,
England. He received his first
musical education as a chorister in Coventry Cathedral and later
studied music at King's College,
Oxford, and conducting
with Sir Adrian Boult and Sir Edward Downes at the Guildhall School
of Music and Drama. He
has been a Music Director and/or principal conductor of orchestras
that include the English Northern Philharmonic, Opera North and the
English National Opera.
Aside for his performances in established opera, he is known
for his staging of operas that were little known and has conducted
the world premieres of Benedict Mason's Playing Away, Michael
Berkeley's Baa,
Baa, Black Sheep and Harrison Birtwistle's Mask of Orpheus. He has performed on
the movie soundtracks of films including Gloriana, Trouble in
Tahiti and The Belly of an Architect,
as well as being the presiding conductor for the 2005 Last Night of
the Proms. His awards
include a Gramophone Award for his series of recordings of English
music and a Laurence Olivier Award for "outstanding achievement in
opera".
