He was a trumpeter born in England who started
out performing in the Salvation Army in the 1930s/40s. In the 1940s
he was a member of the Royal
Philharmonic Orchestra working under the leadership of Sir
Thomas Beecham and in the 1950s he became the highly acclaimed
Principal Trumpet of the Royal
Opera House Orchestra at Covent Garden
. Working
with other ensembles he also performed with the Philip
Jones Brass Ensemble
. His numerous recordings over the
course of his career saw him accompanying artists such as Dame
Joan Sutherland
, and Sir Geraint Evans and his orchestral and solo performances
may be heard on albums that include Handel - The Top 10, The Art
of the Prima Donna, The Essential Handel, Handel Greatest
Hits, The Voice of the Baroque, The World of the Trumpet, The
Essential Wedding Collection, Festive Brass and Treasures of
Baroque Opera.
