Violinist from
Moscow who began playing at six years of age and attended the Gnesine Special Music School, the Guildhall School of
Music and Drama, the Jerusalem Academy, the Royal College of Music, and the
Tel Aviv Academy. His teachers
included Maya Glezarova, Lena Mazor,
Izhak Rashkovsky, Irina
Svetlova, Haim Taub, and Yossi Zivoni.
Before
graduating with a Bachelor’s of Music degree from the Royal College
of Music, he was showered with accolades such as the Croydon Soloist Award,
the Israeli-American Music Award, the James Verwey
Memorial Prize, the KPMG Martin Foundation Concerto Award, the Public
Support Prize and 3rd Prize at the Lipizer
Violin Competition, and the Zubin Mehta Award.
He went on to
obtain his Master’s degree in the field of Advanced Instrumental
Studies, which was conferred on him by the Guildhall School of Music ad
Drama.
In 2002, he
joined the Philharmonia Orchestra. He was part of the warm-up act on 20th
January 2004, along with his frequent collaborator, Mei Yi Foo, in a concert before the concert that comprised
Cesar Franck’s “Violin Sonata” and Sergei Prokofiev’s
“Sonata No. 2”. On
23rd April 2005, the Philharmonia
Orchestra appeared at Royal Festival Hall with pianist Emanuel Ax and
soprano Angela Denoke in a program that included Ludwig
van Beethoven’s “Piano Concerto No. 5 in E flat Op. 73” (“Emperor”),
Richard Strauss’s Also Sprach Zarathustra, and the “Prelude and Liebestod” from Richard Wagner’s Tristan und Isolde.
Other artists
and groups with whom he has performed include Mark Almond, Adam Brown, the
Bromley Symphony, Oliver Coates, Danny Driver, the Knighton
Chamber Orchestra, the London Symphony Orchestra, the New Professionals, Madalina Nicolescu, the
Orchestra of St. Paul, and Trio Morfeo.
On 14th
May 2005, the Bromley Symphony presented the overture from Le Corsaire by Hector Berlioz, “Symphony No. 5”
by Prokofiev, and the “Violin Concerto” of Johannes Brahms, on
which Shlomy was the featured soloist.
Likewise, he
found himself in the spotlight on 4th February 2006, this time with
the Orchestra of St. Paul and Beethoven’s “Violin Concerto”,
Franz Joseph Haydn’s “Symphony No. 101” (“The Clock”)
and the overture from Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s Le Nozze di
Figaro.
The London
Symphony Orchestra teamed up with pianist Barry Douglas on 3rd July
2007, for Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s “Piano
Concerto No. 1”, which was followed by Henri Dutilleux’s
“Metaboles” and Maurice Ravel’s
Daphnes et Chloe – Suite No. 2.
Mark Almond,
Mei Yi and Shlomy gave a recital at the
University Women’s Club in London as a
part of the Kids for Kids concert series, which benefits children in Darfur, Sudan
in 2008.
On 28th
July 2009, Shlomy and Christian Ihle Hadland were the soloists
at the Koster Chamber Music Festival at Kosters Tradgardar for an
all-Mozart affair that featured “Piano Concerto No. 15, KV 450”
and “Serenade in E flat major, KV 375”.
The Knighton Chamber Orchestra employed Shlomy
as their soloist in October 2009 for a concert of Benjamin Britten’s “Serenade
for Tenor, Horn and Strings”, Haydn’s “Oxford” symphony, and Mozart’s
“Violin Concerto No. 4 in D”.
On 30th
November 2009, the Philharmonia Orchestra offered
up Zoltan Kodaly’s “Dances de Galanta”, Modest Mussorgsky’s “Tableaux
d’une exposition”, and Tchaikovsky’s
“Concero pour piano et orchestre
No. 1 en si bemol mineur, Op. 23”, with Simon Trpceski
at the keys. They paired Dmitri
Shostakovich’s “Concierto para violin No. 1 en La m, Op 77” with
Tchaikovsky’s “Sinfonia en Si m, Op.
58” (“Manfred”) on 4th February 2010.
On 26th
February 2010, the Knighton Chamber Orchestra utilized
flautist Jo Conquest and Shlomy as their soloists
in a tripleheader that featured Malcolm Arnold’s “Flute
Concerto No. 2”, Beethoven’s “Symphony No. 6” (“Pastoral”)
and Mozart’s “Violin Concerto No. 4 in D”.
The New
Professionals took the stage at St. James Church in Piccadilly on 8th
March 2010 for an eclectic program that included Alberto Ginastera’s “Concerto for Strings”, Bohuslav Martinu’s “Concertino
for Piano Trio”, and Heitor Villa-Lobos’s
“Bachianas Brasileiras
No. 9”.
On 21st
March 2010, Mei Yi and Shlomy reunited at Wigmore Hall for a recital of works by John Adams,
Ernest Chausson, Mozart, and Strauss.
Joshua Bell
and the Philharmonia Orchestra joined forces on
25th March 2010 for Beethoven’s “Konzert
fur Violine und Orchester
D-Dur” and “Symphonie
No. 3 Es-Dur, Op. 55” (“Eroica”).
On 19th
July 2010, Adam Brown and Shlomy delivered a
guitar and violin recital at St. Martin-in-the-Fields that included Agustin
Barrios’s “Julia Florida” and “Waltz
No. 4”, Leo Brouwer’s “Cuban
Landscape with Bells”, Antonio Lauro’s
“Virgilio”, Alfonso Montes’s “Preludio
de Adios”, and Astor Piazzolla’s “Histoire
du Tango”.
Trio Morfeo, which comprises Mei Yi, Shlomy,
and Brian O’Kane, appeared at St. John’s Church
in London
on 27th September 2010 for Brahms’ “Piano Trio No. 1
in B major” and Mozart’s “Piano Trio in G major, K. 564”.
