Trumpeter and former member of The Tonight Show band whose discography stretches at least as far back as Peggy Lee’s recording of “Winter Weather” with the Benny Goodman Orchestra which peaked at #24 on the charts on 10^th January 1942. In 1942, he also appeared on the self-explanatory Charlie Barnet and His Orchestra.

He was very busy in 1956, appearing on: The Complete Joe Newman RCA-Victor Recordings (1955-1956); The Drum Suite by Manny Albam & Ernie Wilkins; Bobby Brookmeyer’s self-titled album, Brookmeyer; Betty Carter’s Social Call; Maynard Ferguson’s Birdland Dream Band; Gene Krupa’s Drummer Man; Joe Newman’s Salute to Satch; and Anita O’Day’s “Boogie Blues” backed with “Sweet Georgia Brown”.

In 1957, he recorded Let’s Face the Music and Dance with Urbie Green and appeared on Lee Wiley’s album, A Touch of the Blues. He recorded the popera album, Al “Jazzbo” Collins Presents Swinging at the Opera with the Fred Karlin Orchestra in December 1958. In 1959, he was in the studio with Buddy Rich for Compact Jazz and Richcraft, and George Russell for New York, N.Y.

He hooked up with Stan Getz for Big Band Bossa Nova in August 1962, and re-united with him for the soundtrack of Mickey One in April 1965. In between, he recorded I’m Tryin’ to Get Home with Donald Byrd. He rounded out the decade doing Something with Tony Bennett.

The CD era affords us ample opportunity to hear Joe Ferrante’s trumpet stylings in all their digitized glory, including recordings such as Stan Getz’s Verve Masters 53: Bossa Nova, Woody Herman’s The Herd Rides Again… In Stereo, and Q: The Musical Biography of Quincy Jones.
