He is a cellist born in Moscow, Russia. He started to study wile very young
at the Central Music School and entered into the Moscow Conservatory in
1964. In 1965, while still at the
Conservatory, he became a co-founder of the Glinka String Quartet that
would appear in a 1969 string quartet competition in Belgium and win the
first prize. After starting
his professional career he would appear as soloist and a member of
orchestras and in 1975 was conducted by Shostakovich on a recording of his
work just a few weeks before his death. He moved
to the Netherlands to become a soloist and also teach and since that
time has appeared with The
Netherlands Radio Chamber Orchestra
. He has
made several recordings throughout his career including works by Henrik
Andriessen and Willem Pijper with the NRCO
and in Russia with the Mahler Piano
Quartet. As a teacher he has
been a faculty member, since 1988, of the International Holland Music
Sessions and is currently a Professor at the Amsterdam Conservatory and The
Hague Royal Conservatory. He also gives masterclasses in several countries
including Japan, France and Germany.
