He is a multi-instrumentalist, music director,
producer, radio personality, author and teacher born in Texas. He
studied at the Texas Tech University School of Music and his diverse
career in music has seen him working as a guitarist and pianist with
artists and groups including Jimmy
Buffett & The
Coral Reefer Band
from 1970 to 1974, performing as a violist with
the Lubbock Symphony Orchestra and founding and directing The Ranch Dance
Fiddle Band. He has also been active
in the Creative Workshop in Nashville and hosted and produced his own Roots
Music radio show that was aired from Lubbock between 1991 and 1997. Looking back to the roots of his
local area's music, he is very involved in teaching the performance of
Texas Panhandle traditional music to young people and between 1983 and 2002
he was the Country Fiddle Instructor for the Texas Tech University Band. Appearing on several albums he
can be heard on Down to Earth, High Cumberland Jubilee and Living and
Dying in 3/4 Time with Jimmy
Buffett , The Ranch Dance Fiddle with
Frankie McWhorter, My Home It Was in Texas with Buck Ramsey which
won the National Cowboy Hall of Fame's Western Heritage Wrangler Award for "Outstanding
Western Music", Bloomed by Richard Buckner, Deep in the Heart
by Andy Wilkinson and Moonlight on the Colorado by Joe Stephenson. As an author he has published several
books including Play It Lazy: The Bob Wills Fiddle Legacy and
Country Fiddler in Bob Wills Band with Frankie McWhorter, Reading Music
Naturally For Fiddle and The Essential Texas Fiddle: Improvisation,
Harmony & Style with Joe Stephenson.
