    Friman, Anna Maria

    She is a soprano and teacher born in Gothenburg, Sweden who took her further studies in Music in Norway and England.  She attended Oslo’s Barrett Due Institute of Music and London’s Trinity College of Music and ventured out on her career in singing.

     

    She has performed as a soloist with many ensembles that include The Ciconia Ensemble, Gavin Bryars Ensemble, the Latvian Radio Choir, the Norwegian Soloists’ Choir and the Ricercar Ensemble.   In 1997 she became a co-founder of the Trio Mediaevel and since that time has appeared with them in many worldwide concert tours and has seen success with their recordings which include Words of the Angel, Sir dit-elle, Stella Maris and their Grammy Award nominated Folk Tales.

     

    Other recordings she appears on include Oi Me Lasso by Gavin Bryars, Cartography with Arve Henriksen and Camille Saint-Saens’ Oratorio de Noel – Mass, Op.4 with the Stuttgart Bach Choir and Orchestra.

     

    In 2001 she became a member of the jury at the Tampere International Choral Festival in Finland and has worked there regularly ever since.  Later in the mid-2000s she was involved in the collaboration between the Royal Shakespeare Company and Opera North in their Sonnets Project “Nothing Like the Sun” and after premiering the work in Stratford-Upon-Avon they went on a national and Belgian tour.

     

    She has performed in a duo at a couple of Scandinavian events with the trumpeter Arve Henriksen and in 2009 she was chosen to take on the role of Marilyn Monroe in an opera by Gavin Bryars that was based around Marilyn Bowering’s poetry.

     

    Over the last few years she has studied for her doctorate at the University of York in England and also coached in-house vocal ensembles and taught singing there between 2001 and 2007.  She has also held numerous workshops in the UK and Europe and recorded and coached with the Girl Choristers of Washington National Cathedral in the United States.
