He is a trombonist, conductor and teacher born in
England, who studied at the Royal Manchester College of Music after he had
been awarded a scholarship there when he was 16.When he
was 19 he became a trombonist in the London
Symphony Orchestra, would appear with the Philip
Jones Brass Ensemble
and currently
performs and conducts with the Guildhall School of Music Symphonic Wind
Ensemble.His recordings are
several and include Golden Brass with the Philip
Jones Brass Ensemble
, A founding member of the British Trombone Society he has become
known for his work with young musicians and held the position of President
for a term.Becoming a teacher
in 1971 he became a professor at the Guildhall School of Music and 10 years
later he would become a Fellow and accept the post of Professor of Wind and
Percussion.He has taught many
workshops and masterclasses at many educational establishments and also
with professional ensembles and his tireless work as a teacher has been
recognised by International Trombone Association who presented him with the
Neill Humfeld Award for Excellence in Trombone Teaching.As an author he has written and
published the books The Good Brass Guide, How Trombonists Do It and Circuit
Training for Trombone and the Peter Gane mutes for brass instruments
are very in demand.
