Cellist from Binghamton, New York,
who acquired his Bachelor’s degree at Binghamton University
and his Master’s at Juilliard, and studied under Leonard Rose.
November 1981, he and pianist Warren Jones teamed up for a recital at the Norton Gallery that included Cesar Franck’s
“Sonata in A major” and Robert Schumann’s “Adagio
and Allegro, Op. 70” and “Fantasy Piece, Op. 73”.
In 1982, he
became a member of The Metropolitan Opera Orchestra. Other groups with whom he has worked
with include the Arizona Musicfest Festival
Orchestra, the Eos Ensemble, the Met Chamber Ensemble, the New York Piano
Quartet, the New York Pops, the Octavarium
Orchestra, the Omni Piano Quartet, Ottocento
Opera, the Windham Festival Chamber Orchestra, and the Windham Trio.
Metropolitan Opera offered up its 289th performance of Don Giovanni by Wolfgang Amadeus
Mozart, with libretto by Lorenzo da Ponte, on 27th
May 2002, David and John Churchwell gave the
world premiere of Robert Manno’s “Sonata
for Cello and Piano”, which David commissioned.
Trio participated in the Windham Chamber Music Festival on 21st August
2004. Their program comprised
Cecile Chaminade’s “Piano Trio”
and Robert Manno’s “Sonata for Cello
and Piano” and “Three Poems for Two Violins and Piano”.
In the autumn
of 2007, he was back in the orchestra pit for a mounting of Le Nozze di Figaro at the Metropolitan Opera House in New York.
He and John
were joined by violinist Laura Hamilton and violist Ariel Rudiakov for music of Ludwig van Beethoven, Frank Bridge and Robert Schumann in Bruno
Walter Auditorium on 5th March 2009.
December 2011, the Met presented Rodelinda by George Frideric
Handel, starring Renee Fleming in the titular role.
The Enchanted Island by Jeremy Sams on 21st January 2012. The unusual work questions what
would happen if characters from A Midsummer
Night’s Dream were shipwrecked on an island from The Tempest. Not only are Shakespeare’s
plays amalgamated: Sams’ invention features music by Andre Campra, Giovanni Battista Ferrandini,
Handel, Jean-Marie Leclair, Henry Purcell, Jean-Philippe
Rameau, and Jean-Fery Rebel.
