He is a trombonist, conductor and teacher born in the
North of England. After leaving
education he started out as a professional musician by accepting the
position of Co-Principal Trombonist with the BBC Symphony Orchestra in
1965. Four years later he
became Principal Trombone in the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. Working his way through performances
with many of the leading orchestras of London he joined the Orchestra of
the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, and remained with them from 1980 to
1991 as their Principal Trombonist.
During the earlier years he was also a trombonist and conductor of
the Philip Jones Brass Ensemble and with them he would write many
arrangements and compose pieces for them to perform. Alongside his ensemble and
orchestral work he has also played a prominent part in the film and
television industry and has appeared on several soundtracks. As a teacher he was in the faculty
of the Royal College of Music in London from 1970 to 1996 as Professor of
Trombone after which he moved back to the North of England where he is an
Associated Board examiner and a teacher at the Royal Northern College of
Music. His numerous recordings
include Greatest Hits, Eine Keine Brass Musik, The 20th Century
Album and Easy Winners by the Philip Jones Brass Ensemble. Now
You See Me, Now You Don't by Sir Cliff Richard, Battle of the Field by
Albion Country Band, Pergolesi: Miserere with the Wren Orchestra and
Palimpsest by Iannis Xenakis.
As an author and arranger his John Iveson: Christmas Crackers,
is No. 43 in the Just Brass Series, which is regarded as one of the most
important series of publications used by many international brass ensembles.
