    Jones, Katy (1979 – Present)

Trombonist who was a member of the Kirkby Lonsdale Brass Band when she was six years of age and went on to attend Chetham’s School of Music and Manchester University.

From 2001 to 2004, she was second trombone with the BBC National Orchestra of Wales.  Then she became one-fifth of the Fine Arts Brass Quintet.  By 2006, she was doing the solo trombone part in “Symphony No. 3” by Gustav Mahler with Paavo Jarvi and the London Symphony Orchestra.

She was one of several musicians who accompanied Graham Kendrick at Coventry Cathedral, where he performed “Meekness & Majesty” for Pentecost in 2007.

In 2008, Robert Alagna was a guest artist with the LSO for an evening of Verdi highlights that included “Di quella pira” from Il trovatore, “Esultate!” from Otello, “La mia letizia infondere” from Il Lombardi alla prima crociata and “Questa o quella” from Rigoletto.

Joris van Rijn was guest leader on 16th June 2010, when the LSO performed Francis Poulenc’s Gloria with the London Symphony Chorus and soprano Sally Matthews, and Sergei Rachmaninoff’s “Piano Concerto No. 3”, with Vladimir Feltsman at the keys.

On 13th March 2011, the LSO gave the world premiere of “Halo” by Vlad Maistorovici with guest conductor Clemens Schuldt, and performed a pair of works by Ludwig van Beethoven:  “Piano Concerto No. 3” with soloist Jonathan Biss; and, “Symphony No. 7”.

Katy parted ways with the LSO in 2012 and became the principal trombone of the Halle Orchestra.  On 6th December 2012, she and French horn player Julian Plummer and trumpeter Gareth Small gave a pre-concert presentation of highlights from “Sonata” by Francis Poulenc.  The main event featured Rachmaninoff’s aforementioned “Piano Concerto No. 3” and portions of Sergei Prokofiev’s ballet, Romeo and Juliet.

Other groups with whom Katy has worked include the Academy of St. Martin in the Fields, Bones Apart, the DSMS Band and the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain.  During her time with ASMF, she also served in the role of orchestral manager.

Recordings on which she appears include:  Elgar:  The Apostles with the Halle Orchestra, Enigma by Bones Apart, and Mahler:  Symphony No. 5, Rachmaninoff:  Symphony No. 2 and Tippett:  A Child of Our Time with the LSO.  (The latter also features the LSC.)

In the field of music education, she has given a master class to the YouTube Symphony Orchestra, served as a tutor for the English Brass Academy and NYOGB and as a visiting consultant at the Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama.
