    Malin, Carmel

Not many people can say they have played with Portishead and Oscar the Grouch, but then again Carmel Malin is no ordinary violinist.  The same musician who appears on Portishead's Roseland New York DVD and On the Street Where We Live:  Block Party! (feat. Big Bird) can be found on just about every Tony Bennett greatest-hits package, as well as his Who Can I Turn To and Snowfall:   The Tony Bennett Christmas Album.  Other artists with whom Carmel has worked include Shirley Bassey, Deodato, Expose, LL Cool J, Carmen McRae, and Frank Sinatra.  It is unsurprising but still impressive that someone with such New York ties would work on a handful of Woody Allen movies, including Bullets Over Broadway, The Curse of the Jade Scorpion, Celebrity, Deconstructing Harry, Everyone Says I Love You, and Sweet and Lowdown.  They have not been Carmel's only forays into film, or soundtracks, for that matter, as this eclectic string musician also performed on the original soundtrack of The Wiz, Fame, Spike Lee's Jungle Fever, and a 1990 re-recording of George and Ira Gershwin's Girl Crazy.  Carmel is the owner of Joe Malin Music, an orchestra service based in; where else; New York, New York.
