He is an orchestral conductor born in Leipzig,
Germany. He attended the University
of Leipzig and the Academy
of Music to study piano and
conducting and began his career as an orchestral conductor. In 1974 he worked with the Leipzig University
Chorus, becoming their Music Director in 1975, and in 1978 he founded the award
winning New Bach Collegium Musicum which has received much international
acclaim for its specialist performances of Bach compositions, its
international concert appearances and its
numerous recordings. In 1987 he
became Principal Conductor of the Leipzig Radio Symphony Orchestra and
since 1991 he has been associated with the Hamburg Camerata, becoming their
Artist Director in 2001. He has
been a guest conductor with many orchestras including the St. Paul Chamber
Orchestra, the Mozarteum Orchestra and the Orchestre National Bordeaux Aquitaine.
He has made numerous CDs of works by Bach, Handel and Debussy and
many works by contemporary German composers.
