     Roorda, Thies

He is a flautist who began studying music when he was young and after initially studying in the Stedleijk Conservatory at Groningen he entered The Hague’s Royal Conservatory where he was a student of Paul Verhey.  He later moved to the United States to study with Geoffrey Gilbert.

In his career as a professional orchestral and chamber musician, who specialises in music from the Classical and Romantic periods, he has performed in many recitals as a member of The Hummel Trio and the Dutch Radio Philharmonic and Symphony Orchestras.

His acclaim as a flautist has seen many contemporary composers writing and/or dedicating pieces to him.  Some of these composers include Konrad Boehmer, Jean Francaix Gottfried Michael Koenig, Joep Straesser and Isang Yun.

In 2009 he performed in the premiere of Frank Martin’s “Deuxieme Ballade” when it was staged in The Hague.

The recordings he has performed on include Rudolf Escher: Chamber Music Vol. 1 and 2 and Tristan Keuris: Complete Works and Giacinto Scelsi: Music for Wind Instruments and Percussion..

In the field of musical education he holds the position of Professor of Flute at Groningen Conservatory and the Royal Conservatory in The Hague.  He has also given master classes in several European countries and frequently attends events as a guest lecturer.
