In 1979, he appeared Frank Sinatra’s boxed set, Trilogy, and I Am, by Earth, Wind & Fire. He also appeared on EWF’s The Best of Earth, Wind & Fire, Vol. 2, The Essential Earth, Wind & Fire, Faces, and Greatest Hits. In 1980, he hooked up with Tavares on Supercharged.

If anything, the 1990s were an even more eclectic decade for James: He recorded with Agents of Good Roots, Vikki Carr, Willy DeVille, Neil Diamond, Gloria Estefan, Five for Fighting, David Foster, Shirley Horn, Carmen Lundy, Barry Manilow, The NPG Orchestra, Rocket from the Crypt, Texas, and Toad the Wet Sprocket.

The new millennium has seen him contributing to film and television soundtracks such as Elf, Paycheck, and Alias. In 2005, he teamed up with Paul Anka on the ambitious novelty album, Rock Swings.
