He is an orchestral
conductor and musicologist born in Padua, Italy
and he studied conducting with conductors that included Franco Ferrara and
Dmitri Mitropoulos.He has conducted
operas in Covent Garden, Houston Grand Opera and
Roma State Opera, amongst many others, as well as appearing with major
international orchestras such as the Philharmonia Orchestra, The English
Chamber Orchestra, the Tokyo Symphony Orchestra and the Prague Chamber
Orchestra.He founded I Solisti
Veneti in 1959 and the orchestra has received great international acclaim
under his leadership with their revival of many works of Baroque and
Renaissance composers.He has
made over 150 recordings and been the recipient of the Grand Prix du Disques and the Gold Medal of the President of the ItalianRepublic among his many other
awards.After he had been the
Principal Conductor of the Gulbenkian Orchestra in Lisbon,
Portugal, from 1979
to 1986, he now holds the post of honorary conductor with them.As a musicologist he has revised
Giuseppe TartinisViolin Concertos and Sonatas and has also revised Antonio Vivaldi'sOrlando
Furioso which he premiered in 1977.
