He is a cellist and
conductor born in Essex, England. He studied at the Guildhall of Music
and Drama in London and was the
principal cellist for the Royal Scottish National Orchestra. At the same time he was also
Professor of cello at the Royal Scottish
Academy of Music and
Drama. In 1970 he became the
Artistic Director and Conductor of Cantilena, which he was the founder
member of. He received the
positions of Director of Orchestral Studies and Chamber Music and Professor
of Cello at the Welsh College of Music and Drama. He was awarded with an MBE (Member
of the
British Empire) by Queen Elizabeth in 1984
for his services to music.
