     Shilling, Lindsay

He is a trombonist and teacher born in Chatteris, Cambridgeshire, England.  Beginning to learn music at a young age he had risen to performing in youth brass bands on a local and national level by the time he was eleven years old.  He was awarded a scholarship at the Royal College of Music in London in 1977 and after graduation he ventured into the world of freelance musicianship where he would perform with orchestras such as the Bournemouth and Royal Philharmonics, the Oxford Sinfonia, the London Brass and the Philip Jones Brass Ensemble, with whom his RCM tutor, John Iveson, was a member.  Since those early years he has appeared with the main London orchestras and ensembles, including the London Symphony Orchestra between 1994 and 1995, the London Philharmonic for seven years and his current positions as Principal Trombone for the Orchestra of the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, which he has held since 2005, and President of Chatteris Town Band.  His solo performances were highlighted in 2003 when he performed the Derek Bourgeois Sonata for Trombone and Brass Band at the All England Master Gala Concert.  Making several recordings he has been heard on scores of the movies Gladiator, The Man in the Iron Mask, The Lord of the Rings and Chicken Run, the television music for Red Dwarf, The London Trombone Sound, Virtuoso Tuba and Christmas with the London Brass.  As a teacher he gives many workshops and masterclasses and is Professor of Trombone at London's Royal College of Music, which led him to producing and performing on the CD Brass 10.
