     Townsend, Alan

    He is a singer, guitarist, trumpeter and flugel horn player who turned his back on a scholarship when he left school to tour with Jo Jo Gunne who were a popular boy band of the 1960s.  He played as part of The Roy Young Band from 1970 and aside from appearing on their album Mr Funky, he was with them for their backing of Chuck Berry in is live recording of "My Ding-a-Ling".  Later in the 1970s he worked with the duo Curtiss Maldoon and appeared on several of their albums and also performed alongside Deep Purple, Cream and Jimi Hendrix and on the hit single "Resurrection Shuffle" by Ashton, Gardner & Dyke.  When he was in the latter half of his twenties he began to play lead and bass guitar and he also started composing for whomever he was appearing with at the time.  Continuing with his compositions his songs appeared in the musical Vivat! and Henry, the Life and Loves of a King is his own musical which has been entered into a Channel 4 contest where the winner's work is put on in London's West End.  He is a currently a member of the Tamla Tigers who perform classic soul and Motown numbers.
