    Wood, Katharine (1977?-Present)

She is a cellist who began performing at a young age and was a finalist in the 1996 BBC Young Musician of the Year.  She also won an award presented by the Craxton Memorial Trust and 4th prize in the 2002 Swedish International Duo Competition.

During these years and after she has performed in concert many times over.  In 1999 she was a member of the Chalabi String Quartet and performed with them at the Keswick Music Society.  In 2004 she performed in a trio at the Library Theatre in Luton with the violinist Helena Wood and the pianist Iain Farrington.

As a member of London’s Philharmonia Orchestra she toured Europe with Esa-Peka Salonen in 2005, when she also wrote a diary of their travels which was published on their website.  She was also a member of the Philharmonic Orchestra’s Chamber Ensemble.  That same year she appeared live on BBC Radio 3 with the pianist Noriko Ogawa and with the accompaniment of Rebecca Woolcock.

In 2007 she performed as a soloist, again with the violinist Helena Wood, when they appeared in Oxford with the St. Giles Orchestra for a performance of Elgar’s Enigma Variations.

In 2010 Katharine joined the BBC Concert Orchestra as 2nd Cello and, with them, she and violinist Cynthia Fleming, both performing as soloists, recorded John Foulds: Keltic Suite & Suite Fantastique on which they performed the world premiere recordings of Foulds’ Sicilian Aubade, Holiday Sketches, Op. 16, An Arabian Night, Suite Fantastique, Op. 72 and Isles of Greece, Op. 48 No. 2.  She repeated this with the BBC Concert Orchestra that same year when they made further world premiere recordings on John Foulds 2.
