He is a pianist, conductor and composer born in London,
England. He studied the piano and composition
at the Guildhall School,
London and later at
King's College, Cambridge. His first opus was published in 1990
and he gave his first piano recital was given in the Purcell Room, London
when he was 22. That same year he was also a runner-up in the BBC's Young Musician of the Year
competition. He taught at the Royal Academy of Music as Britten Professor
of Music and the University of Essex awarded him an honorary
doctorate. He conducted the BBC
Symphony Orchestra for the premiere of his work, Asyla, and his other
compositions include orchestral works such as the violin concerto, Concentric Paths, the string quartet
Arcadiana and Piano Quintet, and the operas The Tempest and Powder Her Face, which was made into
a film by Channel 4. Among the
many the many awards he has received there are the Paris Rostrum, the Royal
Philharmonic Society prize, the Salzburg Easter Festival Prize, the Mercury
Music Prize and he is only the third British composer in history to win the
Grawemeyer Prize in 2000. He currently holds the
positions of Musical Director of the Birmingham Contemporary Music Group
and the Artistic Director of the Aldeburgh
Festival.
