He was a composer born in the Baroque period in Bologna,
Italy. He studied in Bologna
and became a member of the Filarmonica
Academy which he would become a
principal of in 1702. He the
post of Kapellmeister to the Duke of Mantua but when the Austrian troops
invaded he returned home to Bologna
to continue his work.
His compositions comprise five oratorios, several motets, religious music
and twenty operas which includeDafni, Cesare in Allessandria
and Gl'inganni amorosi scoperti in villa. He was known to be an alcoholic and
it has been said it was reflected in his first operatic works. He drowned in the harbour at Navile Channel,
Bologna
when he was just 35.
