He was occasionally called "Doc" and was
born in Maces Springs, Virginia
and was part of the Carter Family country music group with his wife Sara
Dougherty Carter and Maybelline Addington Carter, who was married to his brother Ezra
(Eck). They started their
recording career in 1927 in Bristol, Tennessee. By the end of 1930 The Carter Family
had sold 300,000 records in the USA. A.P. traveled round Virginia
collecting songs and copyrighting them. They appeared often on radio and
based themselves in Texas and
then in North
Carolina. The group disbanded in 1943 when
Sara permanently moved to California. He was inducted into the Nashville
Songwriters' Hall of Fame in 1970 and in 2001 into the International
Bluegrass Music Hall of Honour.
He was depicted on a US Postage Stamp in 1993 and Route 614 in Maces
Springs is now called the AP Carter
Highway.
