Farina, Mimi Baez (30th April 1945-18th July 2001)

She was a singer-songwriter and activist born Margarita Mimi Baez in New York.  She was the older sister of Joan Baez.  She met and married the composer Richard Farina when she was 17 and they worked together on several folk albums.  Tragically, Richard died on her 21st birthday in a motorcycle accident.   She continued to pursue her musical career, working with her sister Joan Baez, and recording and touring with the folk artist Tom Jans, who she also recorded an album with.  In 1974 she founded a non profit organization called Bread and Roses which brings free music and entertainment to hospitals and prisons.  In later years she spent much of her time on Bread and Roses, although did still perform occasionally.  She died of cancer of the endocrine system on 18th July 2001 at the age of 56.
