She was a singer-songwriter and activist born Margarita
Mimi Baez in New
York. She was the older sister of Joan
Baez. She met and married the
composer Richard Farina when she was 17 and they worked together on several
folk albums. Tragically,
Richard died on her 21st birthday in a motorcycle accident. She continued to pursue her
musical career, working with her sister Joan Baez, and recording and touring
with the folk artist Tom Jans, who she also recorded an album with. In 1974 she founded a non profit
organization called Bread and Roses which brings free music and
entertainment to hospitals and prisons. In later years she spent much of her
time on Bread and Roses, although did still perform occasionally. She died of cancer of the endocrine
system on 18th July 2001 at the age of 56.
