He is a musician, singer-songwriter, composer and
producer born Edward Montague Grant in Plaisance, Guyana,
and he and his family emigrated to the UK
while he was young. He formed the
band The Equals as the lead guitarist and main songwriter and in 1968 his
song "Baby Come Back" became a No.1 hit in the UK
and reached No. 32 in the US. When he was 21 years old he suffered
a heart attack and disbanded The Equals. During the 1980s he had begun his
own record company called Ice Records alongside his solo career where he
had successful hits such as "Living on the Front Line" and
"Electric
Avenue". On all of his solo albums he has
played all the instruments as well as sung all the vocals and produced
them. He has also written
the theme song for the 1984 movie Romancing
the Stone. In the mid-1980s
he left the UK
to set his recording studio up in Barbados.
He has produced for artists including Sting and Elvis Costello and the
Rolling Stones prepared for their Steel
Wheels tour there.
