She is a singer-songwriter and guitarist whose mother
was an opera singer. She
studied at the Dartington Hall School and later became a psychology student
at Durham University. While at
University she began singing and writing songs and progressed from folk
music to jazz. She became a
member of an amateur jazz-rock band while she was employed as an infant
teacher. Eventually moving to
London she met up with Julian Marshall, who she had known while at
Dartington Hall School and together they teamed up to become the duo
Marshall, Hain, while she was earning money by singing in pubs. After seeing success with the chart
hit "Dancing in the City" they would release a further single and their
first album but they did not reach the same heights and they broke up in
1980. She decided to
concentrate on song writing and moved to New York in 1981 where she would
occasionally perform at CBGBs.
Her songs have been recorded by artists such as Roger Daltry, Kiki
Dee, Barbara Dickson, Chaka Khan, Peter Cetera, Selena and Cher, have
appeared on TV series such as Sex in the City, Baywatch and The
Young and the Restless and in the movies Eye See You and It's
My Party. She has appeared
as lead vocals on the albums Contessa's Party and Sprawl and
in her solo career she has released three albums including School For
Spies and Spirits Walking Out.
