He is a multi-instrumentalist, conductor, translator,
composer and teacher born in Sydney, Australia, who is an Honours graduate
from the Sydney Conservatorium of Music. He began to play the violin when he
was 9 years old but he is also proficient on the double bass, guitar,
keyboards, percussion.
In the 1980s he was in the bands Adrenalin and Carbon
Copy and during the 1990s he often played Celtic music as a member of The
Ragged Band, which toured Japan and made appearances at Australian folk
festivals. He went on to form
the Fiddlefest String Quartet and become a Hawkesbury National Fiddle
Festival co-ordinator. As a
conductor he leads the a-capella choir Chorella along with several other
ensembles.
In 1994 he wrote the music for the theatre production The
Bottom Line and in 1995 his Steel Point reached the finals of
the composer’s competition run by the Queensland Philharmonic
Orchestra with the Wittenberg University Orchestra premiering it in the US
the following year.
His work in compositions has seen him writing
orchestral works, string quartets, pieces for solo instruments, stage and
concert music, electronic works, film scores such as The Third Note
and Backflip and songs and he has been the recipient of several
awards such as the 1994 John Antill prize. He is also the writer of a
translation of the popular Welsh song “The Ash Grove” and the
choral work “We Wommen Konne No Thyng Hele”.
In the studio he has appeared on the recording Up
the Sides and Down the Middle with The Ragged Band. In musical education he is on the
faculty of Eoria Centre for Aboriginal Studies at Chippendale, Sydney,
where he teaches music technology.
He is a member of the Delian Society currently lives in Kurrajong
and works in, Sydney, Australia.
