     Layriz, Friedrich (30th January 1808-1859)

He was a composer born in Nemmersdorf, Bavaria, Germany.  He studied at Erlangen followed by Leipzig and after leaving education he became a pastor and held posts in Hirschlag, St. Georgen and Sehwingen during the period 1837 to 1842.  As a composer he was known to have been an advocate of the German rhythmical choral restoration and his works include Kern de deutschen Kirchenlieds von Luther bis auf Gellert and Die Liturgie eines vollstondingen.  He is also known to have written the tune for the hymn  "Einst ist Not" (One Thing's Needful) and translated the carol  "Es ist eine Rose esprungen" (Lo, How a Rose E'er Blooming).
