Arranger,
actor, pianist and songwriter who worked in British television in the
‘50s on fare such as The Benny
Hill Show and Hancock’s
Half Hour before putting himself on the map by creating a virtual
“wall of sound” for Dusty Springfield’s recordings. He co-penned “I Only Want to
Be with You” with Mike Hawker and it became Dusty’s
first solo hit. His
everything-but-the-kitchen-sink arrangement and orchestration set the bar
for artists and producers to follow.
Other artists
and groups with whom he worked included The Hawaiians, Honeybus,
Los Bravos, Alan Price, Anne Shelton, Frankie Vaughan, and The Walker
Brothers. In 1968, an orchestra
and chorus bearing his name emblazoned the cover of the LP, It’s Lovely up Here.
Ivor arranged
and produced material for Edward Woodward in the 1970s for the DJM
label. He also continued to
work in television, conducting the music for several episodes of Dickens of London.
His artist
base expanded in the twilight of his career, including musicians as diverse
as Ian Dury and Julio Iglesias.
