He is a musician, songwriter
and arranger who was a founder member of the band
the Matadors in 1961. After he
met the songwriter Paul Trefzger they founded the
independent label, Saxony Records, in Cincinnati
and their first recorded artist was The Contenders, led by Rollie Willis who had been with Otis Williams and The
Charms. They saw regional chart
success with groups such as The Teardrops and Lonnie Mack but the label was
shelved in 1967. He moved on to
become a songwriter in Nashville
and saw success with his song "The Days of Sand and Shovels"
which was recorded by around 30 artists. He has achieved five No.1 hits,
three as a writer and two as a publisher and his charted songs include
"Chains" by Patty Loveless and "Somewhere Between Love
and Tomorrow" by Roy Clark.
He has also been recorded by John Denver, Ray Charles, Gladys Knight
and the Pips, Dobie Gray and Etta James among
others.
