This orchestra was established in Aalborg, Denmark in
1943 and currently comprises 65 musicians. It is acclaimed for its performances
of symphony orchestra concerts, which regularly feature acclaimed
conductors and soloists. Some
of their conductors have included Matthias Aeschbacher, Moshe Atzmon, Bo
Holten, Owain Arwel Hughes and Frans Rasmussen. It is also known for performing the
music for operas and ballets, providing concerts at educational
establishments and giving chamber performances.
The Aalborg Symphony Choir was established to
accompany them in 1954 and has been an independent association since
1961. They regularly tour on a
national and international basis and have recorded many CDs that
incorporate their native Danish compositions, much English music and works
by many other composers such as Gershwin, Tchaikovsky and Wagner.
In 2004 they were awarded a Danish Music Award for
“Best Orchestral Recording” and in 2008 the moved into their
new concert hall which is part of a complex that houses sections of the
Music Conservatory of Northern Jutland and the Institute of Music and
Musical Therapy.
