Ibolya Toth of the Hungarian Phoenix Studio
established this ensemble, named after the Prince Nicolaus II who Haydn
worked for as a kapellmeister, in 1992. It was made up of members of the Hungarian Symphony Orchestra
with its conductor being Bela Drahos who is a flautist and conductor of the
Budapest Symphony Orchestra.
Initially they were formed to be a recording orchestra for the Naxos
record label but have since branched out and appear regularly in concerts
open to the public. Dependent
on the works being performed the sinfonia will change its size from a small
ensemble to a string orchestra and its repertoire covers everything from
Baroque through to holiday favourites. Their many recordings include Christmas Goes Baroque
2, Franz Joseph Haydn: Symphonies 66-68, Mozart: Le Nozze de Figaro,
Baptist; Symphonies Vol. 1, Vivaldi: Complete Bassoon Concertos Vol. 2,
Chinese Popular Hits for Piano and Orchestra, Chill with Beethoven and Fidelio
which was rated as "One of the Top Ten Recordings of 2000" by Opera News.
