This chamber orchestra was founded in Lucerne,
Switzerland, in 1956
by the violinist, Wolfgang Schneiderhan and the conductor, Rudolf
Baumgartner. They frequently tour
throughout the world and appear in many major music festivals as well as in
their own concert series. They
are the Ensemble-in-Residence at the Lucerne Academy of Music. The repertoire of the orchestra is
very broad and they have premiered over 100 works by composers that include
Krzysztof Penderecki, Iannis Xenekis and Bohuslav Martinu. Soloists that have appeared with
them include Sabine Meyer, James Galway and Reinhold Friedrich and their
music director was Rudolf Baumgartner followed by Achim Fiedler, who took
