This duo was formed in Ross-shire, Scotland,
in 2009 by Keith Helliwell and Rob
Mackenzie. Keith is a published
poet and Rob is a guitarist and they got together to put some of the poems
to a musical accompaniment and see what transpired. The result was Northeastern
Sunrise.
Since they have been performing several of Keith’s
poems such as “Coming Home”, “Poster Girl” and
“Scarecrow” have become songs. Not sticking to just Keith’s
poetry the duo ventured into collaborating as songwriters and “Touching
the Dream” was the result.
All their material comes across as being very heartfelt and personal
and they describe it as “chilled out poetic songs from the
heart”.
The duo, who cites some of their influences as Beth
Nielsen Chapman, Donovan and Richard Shindell, are
championing the tradition of the singer-songwriter. They have since written
further songs together such as "The Echo
Wails" & "Last Roll of the Dice" and are
determined to use their own original material and not perform versions of
songs written by others.
Giving their performances in their local coffee shops
and smaller venues so far, they made their debut at the Strathpeffer
Coffee Shop in Ross-shire and followed that by appearing at a charity
concert and a café in Cannich, Ross-shire where they were joined by
Richard Wood as their guest guitarist.
They have since recorded and published their 2010 6-track
EP Expectation at Strathsound in Struy and will
return to the studio to continue recording before performing at various
summer events.
