This orchestra was
established by Charles Munch in 1967 following the break up of the Orchestre
de la Societe des Concerts du Conservatoire and after he had been
approached by the French Minister of Culture, Andre Malraux,
and Marcel Landowski who was his Music Director. Charles Munch died the following
year and his position was taken by Herbert von Karajan until 1971. Its music directors have included,
Sir Georg Solti, Daniel Barenboim, Christoph von Dohnanyi and the current
holder of the position, Christoph Eisenbach. The orchestra has 121 musicians
and has achieved world renown through its international concerts and
festivals that cover a huge variety of music from all periods. The premieres of works commissioned
from modern French contemporary composers include compositions by Pierre
Boulez, Luciano Berio, Henri Dutilleux and
Olivier Messiaen. After its home,
the concert hall Salle Pleyel, was bought by a
private investor in 1998 they were forced out and they were taken in by the
Theatre des Champs-Elysees and the Theatre du Chatelet
who housed them until they managed to obtain the Theatre Mogador for the
next four seasons in 2002. In
2006, after an agreement with the owner they returned to the Salle Pleyel to take up residence there once more.
