Vocal ensemble
from The City of Brotherly Love that was started in 1972 by organist,
Michael Korn. In the new millennium, they have
been lead by music director, David Hayes. They were dubbed The Philadelphia Orchestra’s
chorus-in-residence in 2001.
Recordings on
which they have appeared include Ceremonies
and Carols, Gloria! Gloria! and
Handel’s Roman Vespers. Equally at home singing Baroque and modern
works, the Singers have become a magnet for commissioned works by composers
such as Philip Glass, Jennifer Higdon, and Vincent Persichetti.
On 15th
December 2001, they helped christen The Kimmel Center, in tandem with The
Philadelphia Orchestra. They
also present an annual radio broadcast entitled “Christmas with The
Philadelphia Singers” which originates from St. Clement’s
Church.
In 2005, they
were forced to drop half their season due to lack of funding, but as of
2010, seemed to be going strong.
