This orchestra was founded in Salt Lake City, Utah, in
1940 by the conductor Maurice Abravenel who led them until 1979. Beginning life as the Utah State
Symphony Orchestra, they quickly gained recognition through their regular national
and international tours and numerous recordings. Merging with the Utah Opera in 2002 they became the Utah
Symphony and Opera under the baton of the current conductor, Keith
Lockhart. Their recordings through
the years have included works by many of the major composers and the
championing and premiering of American 20th Century works. They are based in Maurice Abravenel
Hall, Salt Lake City, and here they annually perform over 70 subscription
concerts and at least four opera productions every year in the Capitol
Theatre. In the realm of
community musical education they perform through Utah to over 55,000
students each year and take part in many outreach concerts.
