Also known as the Wiener
Philharmoniker this orchestra was originally formed as the Philharmonic
Academy by Carl Otto Nicolai in
1842. Once he left in 1847 they
were fairly inactive until 1860 but when they were joined by the conductor
Carl Eckert they began giving subscription concerts. They
have played host to many of the world's acclaimed conductors over
the years including Hans Richter, Wilhelm Furtwangler, Richard
Strauss, Arturo Toscanini and Herbert von Karajan. It is an independent
orchestra where the decisions are made by the members through a democratic
vote. Every year they give a
concert on New Year's Day in Vienna which is dedicated to the Strauss
family. They have been named as
Europe's finest orchestra and the waiting list
for concert subscriptions is 6 years for weekdays and 13 years for
weekends. They have not been without their problems
though and have undergone accusations of feminism (women were
not allowed to be full members until 1997) and
racism.
