(Giovanni Gabrieli)
Baroque
composition that was tailor-made for the Basilica di
Marco in Venice, Italy. The church was built with two choir
lofts which faced each other, and it inspired Giovanni Gabrieli
and others to write pieces of music with call and response, and echo. Its result was that of stereo
surround sound, about four centuries before such an effect could be
machine-made.
“Canzon in Double Echo” is part of a larger work
entitled 12 Sacrae
Symphoniae, and it dates from the late 16th-early
17th century. It has
been arranged for twelve-piece brass choir and octet and has been covered
by a variety of groups, such as the Canadian Brass, the Ohio State
University Brass Ensemble, and the San Antonio Wind Symphony.
