    Concerto for Piano and Orchestra

    (Kees van Baaren)

Kees van Baaren waited until late in life to compose his “Concerto for Piano and Orchestra”.  It was completed in 1964, six years before he died.  His philosophy was that the piano and orchestra are on equal footing, as opposed to concertos that showcase the soloist.  It has been performed by Theo Bruins and Alois Kontarsky in tandem with the Amsterdam Concertgebouw Orchestra, and David Kuyken and the Netherlands Radio Symphony Orchestra.  With a running time of barely twelve-and-a-half minutes, it has fit in nicely on a handful of CDs, such as Dutch Composers of the 20th Century, released in 1973, and Netherlands Composers.
