(Spooner
Oldham/Dan Penn)
The title
track from The Box Tops’ 1968 album went to #2 in the U.S., #3 in
Canada, #15 in the U.K., and #46 in Australia. It has since been covered by Kim
Carnes, The Hacienda Brothers, and Joe Stampley, who
included it on his 1976 album, All
These Things. The original
recording by The Box Tops was released on the Bell label and was backed
with “The Door You Closed to Me”. It certainly opened doors for The
Box Tops, who enjoyed a string of hits in the late ‘60s. According to WABC Musicradio 77, “Cry Like a Baby” was the
#12 song of 1968.
